The Challenge:
The client purchased a large property in Lake Oswego with dreams of transforming the landscape into a native-rich pollinator paradise with edible gardens, meandering paths, and spaces for both wildlife and family enjoyment. During the design process, a large leach field was discovered beneath much of the backyard, significantly limiting where planting and edible gardens could be located.
Project Goals:
Create habitat for wildlife, birds, bees, and butterflies.
Reduce lawn and introduce a more natural, garden-focused landscape.
Incorporate native plants and pollinator-friendly species.
Add raised beds for food production and kitchen gardening.
Create a landscape that felt wild, lush, and inspired by local natural areas.
Maintain open space for dogs and family activities.
Increase seasonal interest and ecological value throughout the property.
Our Solution & Key Features:
Adapted the original design to work around the existing leach field restrictions.
Created a native-forward planting plan focused on habitat, pollinator support, and seasonal interest.
Installed raised garden beds in appropriate locations away from the leach field.
Preserved open lawn areas that now serve as an expansive dog play area and gathering space.
Introduced layered planting beds to soften the formal landscape and create a more natural feel.
Selected resilient plants that provide food and shelter for birds, pollinators, and beneficial insects.
Designed a landscape that balances ecological function, usability, and long-term maintenance needs.
Transformed a challenging site constraint into an opportunity to create a thoughtful, habitat-focused garden.

The backyard now functions as both a native garden and an everyday playground, proving that great landscapes are often shaped by creative solutions to unexpected challenges.
Our Process for Landscape Design in Lake Oswego, OR
Step 1: Consultation
We begin with a consultation to understand your goals, how you want to live in the space, and the existing conditions that will shape the design.
Step 2: Design Landscape
After the on-site visit, our designers create a plan rooted in human observation and plant expertise, reading the site in ways software alone cannot. We consider how you use the space, including pets and chickens, along with sun exposure, soil conditions, and existing structures.
Step 3: Build Landscape
Once the design is finalized, installation is estimated, and the next steps are proposed. From there, the landscape is installed using low-impact practices that prioritize plant establishment, soil health, and long-term ecological function. Plants are sourced through trusted growers, installed with care to protect living systems, and each phase is carried out with clear communication to maintain alignment with budget, timeline, and design intent.
Step 4: Maintenance and Coaching
We offer specialty fine gardening and ecological/edible maintenance for the landscapes we design and install. Every visit supports habitat resilience, plant health, and seasonal adaptations, plus education so you can learn how to care for your landscape, improve soil life, strengthen pollinator populations, and nurture the ecosystem.

Frequently Asked Questions About Designing Landscapes in Lake Oswego
-
Absolutely, all our designs prioritize supporting pollinators like birds, bees, and butterflies. In Lake Oswego homes, we intentionally include two key types of native plants: nectar-rich plants to attract pollinators and host plants that are essential for insect larval stages. By using both, we create a year-round habitat and provide necessary shelter. Even in urban environments, small design choices like diverse plantings and chemical-free maintenance promote biodiversity and strengthen local ecosystems.
-
Regenerative landscaping is a holistic option for those who want to go beyond decorative, lifeless displays and instead transform their landscape into a vibrant, thriving living system. It can replenish, restore, and enhance the local landscape by working with nature, not against it.
