Project Scope:

  • The front and backyard are two very different experiences and goals.

    • Backyard borders a nature preserve.

    • Enhance the front courtyard to create a private oasis/reception area to host summer piano concerts for 20-30 ppl

  • Client is a pianist who hosts summer concerts at home

  • Finished hardscape upgrades the previous year (pathways/patio), and phase II was to incorporate plants

  • Full property included: front, back, and parking strip

Project Goals:

  • Planting design included a mix of natives and pollinator-friendly ornamentals for the entire property

  • Backyard habitat certification

  • Aromatic and private front yard garden to align bloom time with summer concerts

  • Minimize weeds and time spent on this task

Priorities (in order):

  1. Front courtyard: beauty and aesthetics

  2. Backyard: habitat and pollinator garden

  3. Remove noxious weeds and plant more natives

  4. Perennial edibles only where visually appealing

Our Solution:

  • Backyard: extend the backyard nature preserve with showy natives as the backdrop and pollinator-friendly cut-flower plants in the front for an effect that creates a powerful punch of beauty and habitat for birds and pollinators to thrive

  • Front yard: Through intentional design, converted the frontyard into a second “backyard” to make the most of their small footprint to host annual front yard summer concerts - created a private frontyard oasis with a welcome arch and plant barriers to create a cozy, romantic, and inviting space with floral fragrance and summer blooms to welcome guests that is shielded from the road/cars.

  • Vibe that you are tucked away in a lush oasis in the front yard.

Plant Highlights:

A beautiful combination of over 20+ types of plants that pollinators and people love!

Backyard Natives:

Key Features:

  • Artfully transformed a noxious Norway maple into a wildlife habitat, leaving the trunk standing to support birds and other species

  • Reflects Noble Root’s permaculture approach: finding creative ways for the “good parts” of trees to continue serving the landscape

  • Standing and fallen dead wood provides habitat, supports insects and fungi, and enriches soil, giving trees a second life
